What is BUILD?
Buddies United in Leadership Development (BUILD) assists the participants in our Best Buddies programs with intellectual and developmental disabilities to develop their leadership skills. Separated into two tracks, Buddy Ambassador and Buddy Director, the program trains individuals in areas of leaderships and public speaking. The Buddy Director track trains our Buddy Directors on how to be more effective High School and College Chapter leaders, as well as provides education and materials for the officer corps and faculty advisors on how to best utilize the Buddy Director role. The Buddy Ambassador track aims to improve public-speaking skills and confidence in speaking about Best Buddies and our mission.
What is a BUILD Speech Coach?
Speech Coaches are volunteers at their local BUILD Buddy Ambassador training who assist participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they write their speeches. They are paired with a Buddy Ambassador in training for the duration of the session. Although Speech Coaches can be someone the Buddy Ambassador has never met, it is preferred that they are paired with someone the Buddy Ambassador already knows, such as a family member, friend, etc. It is requested that each Speech Coach be a peer or older than the Buddy Ambassador with whom they are paired.
Speech Coaches are given the exceptional opportunity to have a role in this revolutionary program. Many of the participants have never written a speech or been given the opportunity to share their thoughts in front of a crowd. The assistance of Speech Coaches leads to a better quality of speeches and enhanced skills in the art of public speaking.
What are the responsibilities of a Speech Coach?
Speech Coaches can assist with taking dictation, brainstorming, staying on track, editing, content organization, and in a variety of other ways to assist Buddy Ambassadors. Speech Coaches should NOT write or create content for the speeches. Speech Coaches are expected to be present during both training sessions and in their entirety.
Volunteering Speech Coaches do not need any training prior to the BUILD session, unless requested by their local Best Buddies staff members. If the interested party is willing to assist, offer constructive criticism, and be a part of the entire training, then they are welcome to be a part of this unique experience.
